Channel 4 televisions popular archaeology series Time Team have been filming at West Wadden, between Upwey and Portesham. During excavations they have uncovered the site of an iron age hut which is around 2,500 years old.
They were invited to dig at the site by David James and Grace Brooks whose houses have a shared garden. During work to install a septic tank they unearthed pieces of pottery which were identified by the county museum as being roman.
I spoke to presenter Tony Robinson at the end of day one at which point they had not found the hut. He told me that they had found quite a lot of roman pottery and some iron age material but it was fairly typical for them not to find much in the first day.
I visited the site again today (day 3). The remains of a stone building had been uncovered in the fields next to the houses.
The programme is scheduled for broadcast in the spring of 2000.
Pictures to follow.
